SARMAP assisted search planning


About the course

Quickly and effectively establish the location of the incident, identifying the search areas in order to calculate the drift of shipwreck survivors, objects or vessels which have disappeared at sea.

SARMAP is integrated in the Jovellanos Centre’s virtual platform, which can be accessed from any location, providing a useful and dynamic learning experience and a completely customised learning process.


  • Introduction to SARMAP. The marine environment. Interpretation of a SAR scenario. SAR operation outcome. Creating a SAR scenario.
  • Methodology and forecasts. Applying IAMSAR and Monte Carlo calculation methods.Deployment of search and rescue units (SRU).
  • Exercises based on case studies.

Complemented with individual and group activities, discussion forums and a final simulation exercise guided by an instructor.

Target group

Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre operators, Maritime Rescue aircraft crews, masters and officers of the Merchant Marine.

Learning Materials

Practical exercises will be performed on simulators: Communications based on the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) and Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS).
